There is a projected 2 million tonnes of WEEE garbage discarded in the UK every year.  The waste either ends up in a landfill or is burned, both of which are harmful to the environment. WEEE garbage can contain hazardous elements, and when this occurs, the substances are emitted into the air and ground, polluting both. 2003 saw the introduction of the WEEE Directive, which is aimed at increasing recycling and re-use rates of WEEE. In 2006, the law was introduced in the United Kingdom; it only became law in the United States in January 2014. Rather than allowing WEEE to end up in landfills, the goal is to reduce it.
